About
After many years of 4WDing, touring and camping in tents, I decided in 2009 that it was time to upgrade to a camper trailer. Despite looking at numerous models I couldn't find anything that really met all the requirements I had. The trailers that came close were all in the $40,000+ price range, and I didn't want to spend that much on a compromise. So I decided to design and build my own trailer, from the ground up.
At the time, this was never supposed to become a published project, so unfortunately I didn't document the construction as extensively as I would have liked. However, once the family started touring with the trailer, we found ourselves constantly being asked about where we'd bought it. So now, 6 years on, I've put this website together to provide what help I can to anyone who would like to build their own camper-trailer, either similar to my own or of a completely different design.
I hope I've covered all the major points about design and construction, but if there's something that isn't covered, please feel free to post a comment on the page or send an email.
About the author:
I have been driving and modifying 4WD vehicles since well before I finished high school. This was much to the horror of my parents, who constantly found something new added to their Suzuki Sierra!
Over the next 25 years, I drove and extensively modified several other 4WD vehicles, including a few engine swaps, culminating in the well documented Project 200 build of a Toyota Land Cruiser 200 series. Throughout these years, I fabricated many components for my vehicles and built a couple of trailers, which undoubtedly helped me with the construction of the camper-trailer.
What's next?
After going from tent to camper-trailer, when time allows, the next project will cover the build of an innovative off-road caravan. I'll be sure to fully document the design and construction as it progresses, for anyone else who would like to do something similar.
